Microbiology & Immunology


The Microbiology lab holds an outstanding reputation throughout India. It provides facility for aerobic, anaerobic and fungal cultures. It also provides water, food analysis, sterility testing, disinfectants and anti-microbial testing facility.

Diagnosis of Mycobacterial diseases by culture, sensitivity, PCR, T-cell interferon assay and TB antibodies has been the specialty. Facility of Immune-diagnosis of infectious diseases and autoimmune disease is well established. The lab provides assays for all hormones, cancer markers, drugs using Elisa, RIA, Nephlometer and automated fluro-chemiluminiscience AIA-600 system and Immune-fluorescence. Semen bank facility and sperm wash facility is also provided by the department.

The department has done extensive epidemiological work on the infectious diseases like tuberculosis, typhoid, viral hepatitis, malaria, dengue, leptospirosis, HIV etc and provided valuable information to State health authorities. 

AIDS surveillance center, one of the first 17 in India was established in 1987 and now upgraded to a State Reference Laboratory and provides CD4/CD8 count facility by FACS counter. It is also renowned for its work in the area of Hospital Infection Control and Bio-Medical waste.

The department runs PH.D. Microbiology programme affiliated to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidhyalaya. It has published over 100 research papers in National and International Journals and bagged several Awards for research work.

The department has ushered into the diagnostic Molecular area and shortly will have Real time PCR system.
